Water Temperature Information:
Elevated water temperatures are associated with increased mortalities. They also signal possible spawning and can trigger a Vibrio outbreak. In the summer, normal temperatures range from 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 - 12.8 °C). In the winter, normal temperatures range from 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit (-1.1 - 4.4 °C). If the temperatures surpass 64 degrees for more than 24 hours, this is cause for concern.
About the Station:
The Seldovia site is located on the south side of Kachemak Bay, approximately 15 miles (24 km) southwest of the Homer site. As with the Homer site, the sonde is situated 3.3 feet (1 m) above the bottom, in water fluctuating between 16.4 feet (5.0 m) and 43.6 feet (13.3 m). Water in this area tends to have a more marine signature (higher salinities, warmer temperatures, etc.) as Seldovia is located near the entrance of Kachemak Bay and the mouth of Cook Inlet and thereby influenced by waters entering the region from the Gulf of Alaska.
